The Handmade Heartbeat

by Brandi McElhatten
Hey there! Welcome to installment #2 of the Handmade Heartbeat. I came up with the name, with the input of a few friends tossing ideas back and forth. I love the name. When I think about finding handmade things that I love, or even when I am brainstorming a creative project, my heart beats a little faster. Many artists let that same feeling in their heart lead them and don’t stop a project until they love it.

One artist I know who fits into that category,  and our next featured artist, is Stephanie Stanziano of
Flapperfly. I met Stephanie through a mutual friend some time ago. Since then, I have been a faithful fan of Flapperfly. She is also the maker of one of my favorite necklaces that I own. Her work is unique, beautiful, whimsical and elegant all at the same time. So let me introduce you to Steph!

First, what inspires you? I know it’s a broad question, but have at it. . .

The family tradition of my Mom and Grandmothers sewing and doing other handiwork, nature walks (especially flowers), the vintage pieces I have collected, especially vintage Valentine’s, and the pride I feel with a finished piece.

Is there anything special about your pieces readers should know?

They are made with tls (tender loving stress). Just kidding! They are certainly made with love. Each piece of jewelry or sewing project is one-of-a-kind. They are mainly very feminine.  I don’t finish the work until I completely adore the piece.

When looking for vintage pieces to utilize in your work, what’s your plan of attack?

Sparkles! It’s all about the sparkly beads and rhinestones for my jewelry.  I have better luck at “junk” shops, flea markets, and garage sales for less expensive pieces and broken jewelry. I can’t pass up vintage fabrics, tablecloths, or embroidered linens that I can envision being turned into a pillow or purse. I usually find those pieces at Antique shops. I’m also fortunate to have friends who know my style and pick things up for me.
Where can people find your work?

My etsy shop is .  I’m currently doing a handmade challenge called #the100dayproject.  I’m making a pair of earrings a day for 100 days. They will be posted on my Instagram @flapperfly. Feel free to follow me (if you don’t mind pics of cute cats) I’m also open to custom orders.  My email is if you want to get in touch!

So, was I right? Are you swooning over Stephanie’s creations? Yeah, she is amazing. ♥
