Seasonal Musings

SINCE 1611

It’s that time of year. . .when everyone we see seems to be rushing around with their shopping lists, leaving a trail of quickly jotted on post-it notes in their wake. (Or maybe that is just me with the post-it notes?) People in Target walk around, dazzled by the holiday decorations (again, maybe that’s just me), checking out the Hanukkah end cap and the festive Christmas decor. There is Gingerbread everything, and cinnamon-scented pinecones, glitter and lights. There are craft shows and holiday-themed pop-ups. The days seem to go faster as it counts down to the big day. No matter what you celebrate . . Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, Christmas etc. . . .the tradition of gift-giving is big in December. I got curious about what other people wanted in their households . . .so I crowdsourced.

Donkey Milk?

I am going to be honest here, I had no idea about the popularity of Korean skincare products. This one on Memebox has donkey milk in it. This bath bomb from Lush has my name all over it. I am a huge fan of bergamot. I think I need to go over Susan’s house for a girl’s night and hope she shares her beauty secrets with me.

<Keith from Westlake, Ohio>

What is your #1 choice on your Christmas Wish List?

It may not be realistic, but I want a cure for Type One Diabetes for Christmas. In lieu of a cure, I guess I would want people to donate to organizations like jdrf.org or beyondtype1.org to help find a cure or methods to make living with the disease easier.

What is something you want to get for someone else? Who, what, and why?

For my wife, I’d like to get her a nice night or weekend away from home with her one true love (I sure hope that’s me). With a full house, we really don’t have time to kick back together.

What’s your favorite place or places to shop?

Although I’m a big advocate for small business, I may be too anxious to shop around the holidays, so Amazon is the go-to.

Awwwwwww, Keith.

What is your #1 choice on your Christmas Wish List?

This. This is exactly what I want for Christmas.

Wheel of Gouda

Workin on my night cheese. And my afternoon cheese. And my morning cheese. All Day Cheese. Erry Day 😀

What is something you want to get for someone else? Who, what, and why?

My nephew loves, lives, and breathes basketball. He’s been practicing hard all this past year and made the team at tryouts. His favorite team is the Cavs, of course 🙂 And LBJ, not the president, the other one, is his favorite player. I found an awesome print of LeBron by PaperCutz that I am going to frame. And a boat load of Terra Verde’s Wine & Gold soap. For after his games.

What’s your favorite place or places to shop?

Salty not Sweet Boutique. Also, I love Urban Orchid and Ohio City Florists for all the excellent, gorgeous, beautiful, unique bouquets and arrangements I get for my Mama. And B.A. Sweeties, Malley’s, Mitchells Ice Cream, Dave & Busters, the Metroparks, any park for my younger nieces and nephew. Nobody should be surprised at all that the best gift you can give kids is an afternoon of fun, junk food, treats, and time well spent together.  This is why I always get told I’m ” Like the Best Aunt Ever.”

What is your #1 choice on your Christmas Wish List?

The thing I want the most is a trip! Even if it’s a day trip. Just an opportunity to get out of town and see something new.

What is something you want to get for someone else? Who, what, and why?

I want to get a beautiful vintage coat for my sister because I know she had her eye on it. She also deserves it because she’s a first time mommy and she’s killing it!

What’s your favorite place or places to shop?

Canopy!

And the Cleveland Bazaar. And I love buying gift certificates for all the great restaurants around.

What is your #1 choice on your Christmas Wish List?

I really don’t want anything! Unless I could go back in time and sterilize Ryan Seacrest’s father so that he was never born and the Kardashian show was never made . . . we would all be a better society because of it.

What is something you want to get for someone else? Who, what, and why?

I’d like to give my kids all my life experience and knowledge so that they don’t make the same mistakes I did and also so they know that it’s super annoying when they text just a “hey”.

hey.-3

What’s your favorite place or places to shop?

Since I am a hermit I shop at my own store or Target because I don’t sell cat litter or tampons.

What is your #1 choice on your Christmas Wish List?

Oh let’s see… well I am a super avid farmer and lover of green things, so I adore anything from Baker Creek Seed Co. catalog – they have the most remarkable heirloom seeds!! Also on that front, locally I love shopping with Kevin at Grace Brothers Nursery. He is a remarkable resource, and they carry everything to keep our garden healthy and happy.

As a designer too, I have a soft spot for great source material- books that make me really think about texture, color, story, and the wild process that is creation- my inspirations are so varied and unexpected I just love having tons of books at my disposal. Mac’s Backs in Coventry is a fabulous source, and they have special ordered rare items for me many times!

What is something you want to get for someone else? Who, what, and why?

For my husband, Andrew… he is an absolute dreamer and a remarkably kind and creative soul. For him I am giving (I hope he doesn’t come across this!!) A handmade Constellation quilt that we have here at Room Service. Its beauty and attention to detail mirror his wonder with the world- and it’s a piece we will have in our home for many, many years to come. I love timeless gifts, and this fits the bill perfectly.

Not the Constellation Quilt, but the Star Map that R/S Boutique carries that I want.

What’s your favorite place or places to shop?

Well, most truthfully here at our store, Room Service!! We source goods that we believe are beautiful and intentional, and they are the things we want to give to our loved ones. Very often there is a thought to someone, or some experience in our lives when we purchase these products and we love that they then go on to make stories with others!

Additionally, I love our neighbors here in Ohio City – particularly the West Side Market. I love pairing gorgeous local food products with say a bottle of wine and a gorgeous hand printed tea towel, or candle here from the shop. It’s the best of what we all have to offer, and the commerce all stays here in the neighborhood!

So there you have it . . . .what’s on your shopping list? Have you gotten any gifts that have taken the cake? What’s the best thing you have gotten for someone else? Let’s hear it!   Best, Brandi

Holidays!
